Safety

Always be aware of and obey local safety rules and ride with at least on other person on the slope.

Train to be a good skier/boarder, minimum levels are parallel / linked turns, try to be as comfortable riding switch (backwards) as you are forwards.

Do some warm up runs before hitting freestyle equipment, get used to the slope condition on that day.

Inspect the kit in the park before you hit it the first time, does it look safe, how are other riders dealing with it?

Protective Equipment

Wear protective equipment ; a helmet is mandatory at almost all slopes and parks now ; a back protector is strongly advised; padded shorts , knees and elbows pad will reduce pain during unexpected impacts!

Slopes may require the use of your own boards and skis which ideally should be twin tips.  Din setting for ski bindings need to be higher than for general skiing.

Slope Etiquette

Make sure the previous rider has safely left the landing area before you start to run in, signal your run.

Get away from the landing area as quickly as possible.

Injuries

Help anyone who is injured by initially closing that equipment to other riders (crossed arms/poles/skis mean do not enter this area) and then getting first aid help, do not attempt to move an injured person unless it is absolutely necessary for their immediate safety and you are trained in how to do it.  In any fall a head or neck injury is possible and any movement could make the situation much worse.

If injured do not try to move straight away allow first aid/medical staff to assess that you are safe to move without causing further damage.

Insurance

If you are on a wintersports holiday check your holiday insurance covers injuries in Freestyle Parks.

There is no reason not to enjoy Freestyle snowports if you follow the above advice , the sport is probably on a par with Rugby in terms of danger level, it is an extreme physical sport and therefore, you do need to take appropriate precautions.

Be safe and enjoy it!
